Bone Marrow Donation

Donate Your Bone Marrow

The Gift of Life Australia (GOLA) in association with the Australian Tissue Donation Network, Wolper Hospital and the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry are not-for-profit organisations helping to establish a database of potential bone marrow donors.

Every year in Australia, more than 600 people receive blood stem cells from someone else to treat their leukaemia or other bone marrow related disease. Many of these patients find someone in their family to donate their cells, but more than half will rely on a volunteer, with a matching immune system. This volunteer could be you.

Our target is to reach 5,000 Australian registered donors to try and reduce the need for overseas donors or reduce the number of imperfectly matched donors to improve many Australian patient’s chances for survival.

About GOLA

Gift of Life Australia (GOLA) was initially established in 1994 and run by the late Shula Endrey Walder, in association with Wolper Jewish Hospital to help patients in need of a blood stem cell transplant who do not have a match in their family by recruiting potential volunteer donors to the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry (ABMDR). This program was run predominantly in the Jewish Community, where regular testing sessions at Wolper Hospital and at Jewish communal events were held, this program has been reinvigorated by joining the ABMDR Strength to Give pilot Donor recruitment Program.

How You Can Donate

The decision to become a bone marrow donor or any type of donor is a personal one and you should inform your family of your wishes to become a donor.

The ideal type of potential bone marrow donors has been identified as males between the ages of 18-30 years from a diverse range of cultural and ethical backgrounds. By registering, males that fit this demographic, will provide a wide immunological range of potential donors. This increase of donors will potentially reduce the need for overseas donors or imperfectly matched donors and improve many Australian patient’s chances for survival.

We would like to thank all our partners in this initiative.
